Partner Meetings and Conferences

A partner’s time is a valuable commodity, and many firms are looking to reduce the time partners spend in meetings to maximise client facing time.

Done well, meetings can provide clarity and direction; done badly, they can become timewasters and a cause of demotivation.

In some law firms’ meetings are unfortunately unstructured “talking shops;” without actions or outcomes they become a waste of time for the partner, of little value to the client and a drag on productivity for the firm.

To ensure your partners’ and team meetings are a success a structure should be introduced and abided by to:

  • Ensure there is a compelling reason and purpose to meet - avoid meetings for meetings sake
  • Adhere to time allocation
  • Involve and engage everyone present. Many meetings are passive experiences where one or two people talk and everyone else listens – ensuring everyone has a role ensures they are paying attention and involved.
  • Build in opportunities to energise and challenge the team

How I Can Help

I can help firms in two ways. Firstly, by providing on the ground assistance in:

  • Preparing the agenda, notes for the meeting and circulating well in advance.
  • Chairing the meeting, running the agenda, and inviting contribution from all
  • Ensuring discussions end with clear actions i.e., who is going to do what, by when
  • Circulating action points to attendees promptly following the conclusion of the meeting

Secondly, I can provide coaching and mentoring to partners and HODs or their dedicated resource, so that they are able to conduct meetings in this manner.
