Your Leadership Team

Your Management Structure

Sound organisation is necessary for every law firm, not only for its continuity but also for its success, which is why an effective management structure and strong firm leadership, is so important.

Once the vision and strategy has been agreed the next step should be a review of your firm’s management and leadership structure. The management structure should define the flow of responsibility within your firm, the roles of each of the leaders and their responsibilities so that everyone in your firm has clarity as to how it all “hangs together” and who is the right person to seek when necessary.

Your Leadership
Team

The key management roles performed by lawyers in a typical law firm are Managing Partner, Senior Partner, and Head of Department or practice groups. Although these roles differ, there is a common theme running through them – they are all leadership roles.

Those in management roles need to understand what is expected of them and be provided with the necessary management training and support to succeed. They must be effective managers, strategists and “rain makers.” The success of their department or practice area and ultimately the firm, rides on their ability to lead, understand the firm and its vision and goals and being able to communicate, nurture and motivate their teams.

A successful law firm will need to create leaders at all levels of its management structure - at senior and junior leadership levels – those that will actively develop and cultivate their teams to drive the firm’s strategy forward.

How I Can Help

  • A review of your existing management structure and leadership roles to ensure alignment with your firm’s vision and strategy.
  • Coaching and mentoring the Managing Partner. At the most senior levels individuals can feel a bit out on their own, without the benefit of someone to talk things through with. With more than 30 years’ experience and being a former Managing Partner myself I am able to draw on my personal experience and provide sound independent and objective advice or simply be a sounding board that senior leaders can talk things over with. It can be of enormous benefit to a Senior or Managing Partner struggling under the demands of the job.
  • Additional mentoring for a Senior Partner – The Senior Partner role in a law firm involves much more than chairing the monthly partners’ meeting and should include an ambassadorial and pastoral element. I can assist by explaining the nature of the Senior Partner role in the modern law firm, tailoring the role to fit the circumstances of your firm, and helping the Senior Partner perform the role.
  • Practical support for Heads of Departments (HODs) new to management roles to explain the role of HOD and how to inspire and motivate their teams and drive their department forward, growing the work and improving profitability.

Coaching and mentoring sessions are delivered to suit the requirements of the firm, either on a one-to-one basis as part of an ongoing partner development programme or as part of an off-site “Away Day” partner/leadership conference.
